Boa Vista Island
Geography
The island of Boa Vista, the easternmost of the Cape Verde islands, is about 500 km off the African coast, and is the third island of the archipelago in size, with an area of 620 km2. It has an almost circular shape, and a great predominance of beaches, especially on the West and Southwest coast. This fact, associated with areas of environmental interest, located from the north coast to the Southeast coast, gives it an enormous tourist potential.
Rainfall is usually very low, ranging from 75 mm to slightly more than 120 mm. Average annual temperatures are 24-25 ° C. The winds blow with relative intensity throughout the year, suffering a slight decrease during the summer. The average relative humidity rarely falls below 60% and is most often between 70 and 90%. the lowlands, being limited the mountainous system to small hills, being the highest point Monte Estancia, with 387 meters of altitude. The dunes can reach several meters in height, and because of their high landscape and ecological value, play a primordial role in the protection and conservation of the coast, with an important role against the erosion of the beaches, functioning as a reserve of sand for their protection.
The eastern part of the island is characterized by a large concentration of natural resources, such as sea turtle breeding populations, seabird colonies, dune fields, wetlands and associated fauna, coral colonies, unique fish species, , rare species of birds and millenary trees, such as calabaceira, fig-brava and almond tree, giving the island an enormous ecological value.
The strong trade winds that blow from the northeast, create a sand corridor that crosses practically all the zone west by what predominates, in this zone and the southwest of the island, low lands and extensive beaches. The western part of the island is devoted to conventional tourism, and to the east, for environmental values. It is in the western part that are the ZDTI.
Demography
According to the 2010 Census, the population of the island is 9,162 inhabitants, and of these, about 41% is rural population, although this one does not live agriculture. Given the extent of the island (it is the third largest island in extent), the population density is extremely low.
There is a majority of male population on the island (59.2%) due to female emigration, particularly to Italy. The population between 15 and 64 years old represents 71.4% of the total, with those under 15 years of age constituting 22.6% of the residents. The activity rate is 78.9% and the unemployment rate in 2010 was 5.7%.
Tourist potential and aptitudes
The general geographical characteristics of the island of Boa Vista, where the beaches are extensive and very suitable for bathing, especially on the west and south-west coast (with the exception of the ZDTI of Morro de Areia, which has a rocky coast with a sea area with a concentration of sharks and the possibility of articulation and complementarity of areas of environmental interest, which occupy the opposite side of the island from the north coast to the Southeast coast, give it a potential dominant profile of “family beach tourism” with an important component of “Environmental tourism”.
The environmental component which, in accordance with the principle of active protection, should have associated some capacity for housing, assumes its own attractiveness, given the growing interest in environmental issues. In addition, the environmental component will have a valuable and enriching role in the experience of conventional beach tourism.
